The Canyon House

Completed in 2010

Chattaroy, Washington

Contractor: CN Construction

The Canyon House was blessed with a “one of a kind” site which surprised us with intimate basalt canyons and terrain that offers maximum privacy, but still delivers great views of Mount Spokane. Taking our cues from the site, the house is organized around a masonry ‘canyon’ that connects the social, private, and guest spaces. A single-pitch roof that helps give the house its eastward orientation on the views is interrupted by a large irregular skylight that crowns the central hallway. An exterior palette of oxidized metal, dune-colored stucco and tropical hardwood help integrate the home in the landscape of basalt and dry grasses. Inside, custom furniture and bespoke tile patterns help echo the forms and inspiration of the house at multiple scales.
