Embracing Patina

Completed in 2014

Spokane, WA

Contractor: Copeland Architecture & Construction

This journey began with a love of site, but with only 0.15 acres and 35 feet of elevation change, the challenges of building on this infill lot became character-defining. The internal and external spaces were layered vertically, and strategically aligned to the site with morning sun warmth, afternoon shade for alfresco dining and cooler sleeping quarters. While many projects can benefit from the use of materials like soapstone countertops, cabinets without hardware and cedar siding, it is precisely all these types of materials that the owner wanted to showcase the aging of the house—and learn to embrace the natural patina.
