Sensible & Serene

From a certain point of view, this story is no different than any other project—there is a site, a program and a budget; however, this time the client was one of the company owners and his wife. Through the years designing, building and now living in the house, our owner further understands the circumstances of a house project, including both great satisfaction and many challenges, which come with this process.
The site is a rolling five acres of field grasses, pine trees and basalt rock outcropping providing a very serene and secluded setting. In our single story concept, we took advantage of our views east to Mt. Spokane, but oriented our house to the south for the passive solar attributes. Our programming challenge was the evasive solution of a small house with big rooms at 2000 square feet. The entry art gallery opens to the kitchen, dining and living and leads to the master suite and secluded deck. To conserve space, we resolved to combine our office spaces, media room and guest bedroom into a very comfortable room for all these spaces. Add a mudroom, guest bath, pantry and storage and we have just less than 2100 finished square feet. Additionally, there is an optional 300 square feet of work shop and storage that can be converted to an additional bedroom.
