Site location was the driving concern for the owners of this project. It needed to be within a ten minute drive from the hospital, so vacant rural land was not an option. Instead, it was decided to purchase an existing house in a preferred neighborhood and utilize as much of the structure as possible. The clients wanted a modern house of simple, elegant detailing. They preferred clean, clutter free spaces with an abundance of natural light and a minimalist color and material palette.

The clients and their four children required room and separation. Utilizing the legacy of the original split level, the children’s wing was designed over the garage, separating it from the music room at mid level, the living room down a partial level, and the master suite on the upper level. The master suite, comprising of a roof deck, exercise room and the master bath was also situated toward the back of the house to isolate it from the street noise. A glass rail stair connects the levels, while separate stairs connect the garage and kitchen. The swimming pool in the back is visually accessible from the kitchen and the study.
