Clifftop Modernism
The clients wanted a contemporary artistic statement - something quite in contrast to their former house which was a turn-of-the-century craftsman style home. We decided early on in the design process to give it a distinctive profile. Building this complex shape took some heavy thinking, but with two hidden , curved steel cantilevered beams and 18” deep transverse joists, the challenge was solved. The house is 3020 sq. ft. plus a big three car garage. Most of the excitement spacially is in the great room. The kitchen, dining, living and a curved wall hiding a wine room fill the space. Big windows look out over the cliff and interior walls are painted some pretty wild colors. Adjacent to this space, behind an open stairway going up to the master bedroom/ bath area, is a study at the view side and an interior media room. Down the hall past the front entry door are a guest bathroom, two bedrooms, another bathroom and a laundry room.
Outside there is an infinity-edge pool. Surrounding the pool and extending southerly under the big curving overhang is a large concrete patio. This house has very contemporary plumbing fixtures, exciting colors, curving ceilings, cable railed stairway, flush fir cabinetry and doors, sheetrock returns at windows and doors, brushed steel hardware finishes which all combine to give this house a striking contemporary feel.
